Good Weekend?

I had a pretty decent one thanks, I didnt particularly do much but I was good all the same. I managed to consume half of the counties imports of alcohol, keep fit and manage to come away with a very very scratchy throat because of it.

Friday night I was pretty bored and was looking for something to do, loads of people were busy and I didnt feel like going out for a beer so I MSN’ed a friend and enquired as to whether he fancied going to the cinema. I had liked the look of Silent Hill for a long time so I asked him if he was up for that, he agreed and we went to the latest showing of 9:30pm.

The film itself sticks pretty close to the game, although it follows the mother’s perspective on it all.

A mother and father are trying to deal with their adopted daughters dangerous sleepwalking affliction. The girl repeatedly shouts the name of the town from which she came (”Silent Hill”), and the mother believes that taking her to Silent Hill may be the catharsis she needs to snap out of her dementia.

The two of them drive to Silent Hill, against the father’s wishes, and crash the car when they try and avoid a mysterious figure crossing the road. The mother wakes up hours later and sees that her daughter is missing… and Silent Hill has become some sort of nightmare alternate dimension plagued by monsters, mutants and creepy street people.

The camera work and the effects are great, the lighting really adds to the sense of terror when Silent Hill plunges into the “Otherworld”. The use of the horns when this change takes place sends a shiver up your spine. The characters are well casted, Jodelle Ferland puts in a fantastic performance as Sharon but Sean Bean is terrible with his Sheffield-American accent, it really puts you off his character.

Scary-ish, not a bad good plot and definately open for a sequel.

On Saturday I was up early to go and look for some cars. I wanted to keep it localso I went to a local garage where I had looked once before. There were some nice cars, lots that my mum and stepdad would tell me would be “reliable, good value, able to fit the dog in the back, comfortable blah blah blah” but they didnt float my boat. I did see a Ford Fiesta though that piqued my interest, it was a 1.4 litre, Turbo Diesel with tinted windows and alloy wheels. The only down side was that it was £500 over my budget.

The car dealer shows me inside and says I can take it for a test drive. I get in with the ‘rents and blast it down to a local place called Wickford. When you are used to driving a 1-litre car and you get in a 1.4 Turbo Diesel, the difference is amazing (especially the pickup in second gear, the acceleration is fantastic).

I pull back in and I have my heart set on it. Now for the bargaining. I say I am interested but only have £6000 to spend. He says he can do a deal for £6200 reduced from £6495. I mull it all over and get out my debit card, I offer £6100 and if accepted I would buy it right then and there. He accepts and I am the proud owner of a 2004 Ford Fiesta. Unfortunately I am not able to pick it up until tonight, but hey it will be sitting there waiting for me when I return home from work!
