Finally!

Posted by: Matt In: General| Happy| Tech

OK, this is a geek moment. Every single person who has ever installed an update for their Windows XP will have encountered this annoying popup box. It’s the popup box that when you have installed all the updates they allow you download, it asks Restart Now/Restart Later and then proceeds to popup every 30 minutes until you finally decide to restart.

Well the answer is here. It’s not new, big, clever, infact it’s really simple and most people dont know about it. Here’s how:

Start / Run / gpedit.msc / Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations

You can configure how often it will nag you or completely disable it like I did.

edit: This only works for XP Pro.

Enjoy!

that is cool, now you need to make a .reg file so people can download it and tweak without having to go through the process.

i remember when you posted about the virus (several site redesigns ago?). i think you had said the tech stuff wan’t your job, but now what? who is the geek guy? who owns the internet?

lol! Dont, please dont go there. The review has firmly put me in the driving seat now though, I am able to re-write my jobs specs, thats pretty cool.

Making a .reg file should be easy, there is a fix to set the notification in the registry to = 1 so that would be easier for people I guess.

As for the redesign, people have commented and said they dont like it, what do you think?

i had actually thought you’d put up some custom css after that conference, and i’m still expecting you to get around to it.

in the mean-time though i think the current look is pretty cool, except one small disappointed - that little javascript tag on the top. i had turned down my speakers at work, looked around to make sure no one was watching (never know with you), and then pulled it… what a let down ; )

hahaha, sorry to disappoint. I have been using my new found CSS magic on the new website for my work, it is coming along really well. I am pushing for a go live of about 4 weeks now, I just need to get all the marketing crap out the way and finalise the layouts I have employed.
