The KnifeMan Commeth!

Posted by Matt under Funny

My girlfriend’s parents have been away since the Friday, with her being a little uncomfortable about being alone for so long and the fact it means I can spend a lot more time with her, I packed a bag and have joined her for the week.

Last night, we were in bed, having an early night as she was meant to be working an early at the hospital, Harry, her dog started going bananas. I had taken the mutt outside before bed for a play and a wee so a bark didnt mean he was bursting for a wee. Anyway, Harry is going nuts and we hear noises. We dismiss it as him seeing a fox, or a passing pedestrian.

Then we hear a voice.

Rising instantly, I put on a pair of sports shorts and walk to the landing. I can hear nothing except the dog running about with his small gait on the wooden flooring. My girlfriend slowly walks to the recently vacated parents bedroom and gets her father’s protection from intruders, a 10-inch bladed knife. I unbutton it from its sheath and walk downstairs gingerly.

Apon reaching the bottom, I switch on the downstairs hallway light………nothing.

The dog comes up to me and starts jumping at me.

On tiptoes, I tread lightly and look in the kitchen…….nothing. Turning quickly with knife held infront of me, I walk towards the utility room, push the door and check for intruders…..again, nothing.

The front door still have the security latch on it, nobody had come in that way. So if there is/was an intruder, the front room is going to be the entry point. Chatting loudly to the dog to try and scare off any would be attacker, I kick the door open…………

Nothing!

Checking the windows, they are all locked. I turn to the stairs, put the dog back on its bed and ascend. My girlfriend is visibly shaken, I gesture for her to get back into bed. We both get in and lay there listening, no sounds can be heard apart from the chiming of the grandfather clock. My heart is going two to the dozen with all the adrenaline pumping through me, I close my eyes and try to drift off. I suggest that if it wasnt an intruder, it could mean that the place is haunted (the girlfriend has long suggested that her late grandfather had been seen at the end of her bed one night). I get a prompt slap and a real go at for making her even more scared!

I eventually got to sleep, my girlfriend is still pretty worried and all the people laughed at work. I quite enjoyed being a have a go hero for two seconds ;)

Paste Multiple Lines into Input Boxes on Firefox

Posted by Matt under Tech

Ever tried to paste a multi-line bit of text into a Google Maps input box or the like and only had one part of it copy over? Now, by tweaking one setting inside your favourite browser, you can paste all that texty goodness!

Type “about:config” in the location bar. In the “Filter” field type “singleline.” You can set the value to 2 for editor.singleLine.pasteNewlines, which will allow pasting of multiple lines to input boxes.

It even works for the Address Bar, cool eh?!

Downtime

If you tried accessing the blog the last couple of days, you may have been greeted with a blank white page. I don’t specifically know what caused it but Drew, the server host, upgraded the version of PHP and all was well again :)

Thanks man.

Introducing ClickComments

Posted by Matt under Blogging, Tech

CoolAccording to Jakob Nielsen, 95% of your blog’s viewers dont comment, with 0.1% participating regularly. In light of this, PostReach has developed ClickComments, a system that doesnt require you to input all your details just to comment, you simply find the button that corresponds with the response you wish to leave for a certain blog post and vote away.

I thought I would test it out and see how it worked, please note that it is not design to replace comments, simply allow people who may be too shy to post, to share their views on your blog.

It’s compatible with Typepad, Wordpress and Blogger…..Data, have a look!

Again, I must stress this doesnt replace the old comment system, please do still use this!

You can download by going to their site, or if you are a Wordpress user, download the file from here.

Update: You may have noticed that there isnt a button for negative comments, if you do have any, just fire them the normal way using the comments link at the top of each post. :)

Is Firefox that secure?

Posted by Matt under Tech

FirefoxDont get me wrong, Firefox rocks my socks off. But having ported my Firefox profile across many different computers and installs. I have thought that if I was to leave the Firefox profile (simply, a folder) of my home computer on my USB key and was to lose it, could someone copy my profile from my USB key and then have all my Firefox preferences, extensions and ultimately my passwords?

The process of copying your Firefox profile and installing it on a computer is as simple as:

1. Shut down Firefox completely (File > Exit).
2. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\ and copy the folder “Firefox”. Backup to removable media.
3. Navigate to the same folder on your other computer and overwrite the folder by pasting the Firefox one you copied.

It’s that easy, just think of the passwords people (or even I) could steal by copying a customers Firefox folder and using them to log in to their favourite E-Commerce sites.

I could be wrong, you cant do this with Internet Explorer (that I’m aware of), but isnt that a major security risk?
