"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. " - Morpheus - The Matrix

What a sucky day!

Posted by Matt under Angry, General, Tech, Work

Following on from the post below, I was doing some work and fired up my FTP software today. Suddenly I realise that I cant drag and drop any of the files. Assuming that the virus had maybe changed some of my settings, I looked high and low for a solution to my problem.

I installed various registry fixes, I used Windows’ inbuilt “System File Checker” to see if there were any .dlls out of place, I even used System Restore and rolled back to last Friday in my attempt to figure it out.

I then stumble across a forum where someone points out they had to re-install their mouse drivers, they also mentioned the middle scroll wheel. I push the middle scroll wheel down and what happens?…….it sodding works!

I am going to cry.

The Nyxem Virus :(

Posted by Matt under General

One of the machines at the place I work was infected with the Nyxem virus. This is probably the worst virus I have ever encountered, to be honest I havent dealt with that many but this really holds it’s own up there.

Name
  • W32/Nyxem-D
Type
Side effects
  • Turns off anti-virus applications
  • Sends itself to email addresses found on the infected computer
  • Deletes files off the computer
  • Forges the sender’s email address
  • Uses its own emailing engine
  • Downloads code from the internet
  • Reduces system security
  • Installs itself in the Registry
Aliases
  • Email-Worm.Win32.VB.bi
  • CME-24
  • WORM_GREW.A
  • W32.Blackmal.E@mm
  • W32/Tearec.A.worm
  • Email-Worm.Win32.Nyxem.e
  • W32/MyWife.d@MM
  • Win32/Mywife.E@mm

As you can see it really does its best to fcuk with your systems. I had noticed when it installed itself that it tried to close all running applications, send out mass mailing from your system and disable the antivirus. Not only did it disable the antivirus, it damn-well deleted the executable file of it aswell!

OK, so it running rampage throughout the system. I go into regedit and search for the value scanregw (which names itself “Scan Registry” in the registry). This is the file that boots on startup and makes your life a living hell. Once that is deleted, its a simple sweep for virii and the files are deleted.

Is that it? No.

The virus also sends itself to email address in your contacts and ones it can find in text files on your computer. It creates at least 7 copies of the infected .exe on network shares (being in a company this is very very dangerous and of course easy to do when you use the shares daily).

So now it is deleted, the virus scanner is clearing up the rest of the shares and I can breathe a sigh of relief. If you need help, I will write a page on how to delete the virus from your system.

Peace.

I have been….

Posted by Matt under General

Distinctly lazy the past week and I am starting to feel significantly different because of it. Two Sundays back I had a minor tear in my hamstring, it was probably closer to a major strain. Anyway, I still trained and played the following Sunday, this was a bit of a mistake. The hours following the match, I was in agony.

That made me skip training this week, mainly just to rest it. Since the Tuesday, I have felt a great deal more tired and lethargic, the endorphines that make you fresh after exercise were severely lacking and it shows. I want to get out and do something, something active but I am really not a man for running by myself and a gym is just too far away. For this reason alone I need to drive!

I hope the muscle will be fine for Sunday and I will be back to normal again, missing football has had a really profound effect. I dont know how the 8 or 9 players that skip training put up with the lack of exercise, I’m suffering and it’s only one missed session!
